Moms In Business: Nicole Dean

This week Moms In A Blog is proud to present to you my friend Nicole Dean of  Show Mom The Money.

If you’re thinking about starting a home-based business this is one site I highly recommend.

Take it away, Nicole!

What made you decide to be a work at home mom?

The story is a long one. Back in 2001, during the 3 weeks after 9/11, my daughter was born and my husband was laid off from his job. We went from a one income family to a no-income family and it was incredibly stressful. I never wanted to be in that position ever again. That’s the day I decided that I needed to bring in some serious income, fast. Of course it wasn’t fast, but it did happen. 😉

What is the nature of your business?
I have an online business that is comprised of many websites. My entire business is built around work at home moms, online home businesses and internet marketing information.

I make money a few different ways, mainly: advertising, affiliate marketing, consulting, and selling ebooks that I have written and seminars that I have recorded.

What made you decide that particular business?
I realized that I enjoy sharing information and recommendations, whether it was a favorite recipe or a recommendation for a great movie that I saw. When I found out that I could make money by doing what I had been doing for free, it was a natural fit for me.

What has been your biggest challenge?
My biggest challenge has been self-confidence and time-management. When your business is your own, every piece of it feels personal at first. It can be quite a roller-coaster while you’re getting up and running – feeling like a total rock star one minute and feeling like the world’s biggest stink-bomb the next. It’s something that takes a lot of soul-searching to get through and come out successful on the other side.

What has been your biggest success?
I have had a few successes that have stood out to me for different reasons.

  1. Financially, my biggest success was when my income surpassed my husband’s.
  2. Emotionally, my biggest success was when I got enough confidence to do live recorded interviews and teleseminars.

What is the besy way you promote your business under $10.00? under $50 worth it at any cost?
There are a lot of ways to promote your business free.

  • Under $10, I’d say to write a few articles and submit them through
  • Under $50, you could do a lot of different things – buy a few solo ezine ads, get a press release written or get 5 articles written that you could use for article marketing.

Each of those could really give you a boost.

How do you balance work and family?
I have my own office. Having that space helps tremendously to separate work time from family time. Also, I use a timer. I find that if I say “Give me 15 minutes…” and I don’t set a timer, it could easily become 2 hours. But, if I set a timer and it’s beeping at me, I’m off in 15 minutes.

To what do you attribute your success as a WAHM?
Perseverance. I’m too stubborn to quit.

What impact has blogging made on your career?
I enjoy having a blog, but I would not consider myself a blogging expert. I like the exposure that my blog offers, but I’m not a “blogger” in my heart and soul like many are. To me, it’s simply a platform for building relationships.

Can you recommend any resources for WAHMS who are just starting out, or perhaps trying to make the transition from the workplace?
Certainly. I would recommend & – both sites of mine that offer free information.

From there, I would recommend choosing an idea and getting a website, WordPress blog, or even a blogger blog set up and playing with it. If I say “Playing with it” it sounds less threatening than “starting an online business”. Take your successes and duplicate them. Take your failures and learn from them.

You’ll see from there where you want to go and, hopefully will find your path.

What can you tell us about your other ventures.? – Look to this site for excellent affiliate programs. – A website that offers articles to bloggers and website owners. A free advertising course where people can learn how to get more traffic to their websites.

And, of course, I have many other projects, but those are the ones that I think beginners would enjoy the most.

Is there anything else that you want to share with the readers?
It IS possible to make a full time living from home. Learn and apply. Don’t quit. And, ENJOY the journey.

What is one thing you can't do without in your business? – Without them, I’d be dead in the water. 😉

What one thing should be avoided at all costs?
Avoid free hosting. Avoid “get rich quick” scams. And, avoid anything that your gut tells you is a bad idea.

What's the biggest business killer?

Self-pity, self-loathing, self-doubt, and self-blame.

Translation: Be nice to yourself.

What advice do you wish someone would've shared with you when you first started out?

I wish that someone would have said “Nicole, just relax and enjoy the ride. Hire help early and trust in yourself.”

It would have helped me travel the road to success a lot faster.
