Writing Constant Content Is Exhausting
...but, we need content. It's the building block of the Internet.
According to Smart Insights, the most successful online businesses have a solid content marketing strategy in place. In this fast-paced marketplace, we need to put out content frequently and regularly. Of course, it has to be quality content to even have a chance of reaching and influencing the people we are trying to get in front of – our target audience.
The Problem?
Writing constant content gets exhausting.
If you've been in business for any length of time, you've noticed this yourself. In the beginning, it's easy. You're excited, you're highly motivated, and there's a lot you want to share. Writing three to five blog posts per week seems like no big deal.
However, six months in, the exhaustion is starting to set in and if you have ever maintained a blog or website for decades like I have; it gets excruciating at times. Thankfully, it doesn't have to be that way. Let's look at why there is still a need for constant content creation, and then we look at some solutions together.
You Need Fresh Content To Reach New People & Keep Your Readers Engaged
To have a thriving business, you need a steady stream of new people in the door. With your online business, these people visit you visually and they find you through the content you share on your site and on other platforms, including social media sites. You can also get in front of them by creating content for other sites. Guest blog posts are a great example of this type of content marketing.
Then you need to build a relationship with these people. They don't know you yet and thus don't trust you. You gain their trust by showcasing your expertise and by engaging with them.
Engagement also helps you maintain a good relationship with your existing audience. Like all of us, your readers come across a lot of content each day. It's easy for them to forget about you if you don't stay in touch regularly. You want to:
- pop up in their social media feed.
- have them come back to your site regularly.
- have them open your emails each week.
and they will if you can provide them with a steady stream of quality content.
You Need To Focus On Creating Paid Products & Services
The other big problem is that you have other content creation tasks that are just as – if not even more important than the writing you share freely.
To make money with your online business, you need to offer products.
Some of the easiest and most profitable ones to create are digital products. Yep, we're talking about eBooks and courses where people pay you for your expertise. Or how about finding the time for a couple of high-paying consulting gigs? And let's not forget about services.
Sometimes your audience wants you to take care of things for them after you explained to them what needs to be done. Nothing wrong with that, especially when they are willing to compensate you handsomely for your time and experience. That's true of anything. We recently took a course to learn more about bookkeeping and then signed up for a paid service to help us get caught up quickly. It's a win-win.
But all of those activities take time. You're expected to create this additional paid content (or the service you offer) in addition to staying caught up on your content marketing schedule. That's much easier on paper than it is in person. Trust us, between the two of us we have decades of experience. And it doesn't even end there …
You Need To Market Your Content & Your Products
Now that you've gotten all the writing and content creation for the day, you're still not done writing. Your work isn't done!
You have to market not only your products but also your free content if you want it to be visible to your target audience.
This includes sharing your blog posts on social media and in your emails. Maybe you'll even advertise some of them on Facebook. Then there is all the marketing for your various paid products and service. And guess what? All that marketing takes words. You may not think of them as content, but copywriting is another form of content creation. It doesn't even stop there.
How about that new lead magnet you want to create to grow your list? If you ever sit down and think about all the emails, articles, ads, and various other pieces of copy you write as part of your overall marketing efforts, you'll realize that it adds quite a bit to the amount of words you write on a monthly basis in addition to what most of us think of as content marketing.
So, Let Me Say It Again, “Writing Constant Content Gets Exhausting!”
There's a lot of stuff you need to do consistently to make sure content marketing works and works well. As I've mentioned in the introduction to this article, it can get exhausting. You run out of stuff to say. You want to do something else. There's always a fun new idea for a different type of business, or a new product. Then of course there's everything else you have to do to keep your business running and profitable.
How do you keep from burning out when it comes to content marketing? After all, as we've established, it isn't exactly something you can stop doing, or scale back on. And when you want to take a few days off, you have to work twice as hard to get ahead.
The Solution? Actually, There Are Three…
1.
Hire a Team of Writers
The first and most obvious solution is to outsource much of your content creation. You can hire a writer, or even a team of writers, to take care of it for you. There are plenty of people out there able and willing to write blog posts, short reports, and entire eBooks for you. There are also plenty of VAs out there happy to take care of your social media marketing for you and they will create much of the content including social media posts and images for you.
The only downside with hiring a team of writers is that it can get expensive. Start small and scale up when you know your content gives you the ROI (return on investment) to make it worth having a team of people on board who focus purely on content creation.
2.
Repurpose Existing Content To Avoid Writing Constant Content
Another viable option, and something every smart online marketer should do is repurposing everything you've already created. Look through those blog post drafts.
- Can you take one portion of a post that's received some comments and engagement, and expand on the topic?
- Can you repurpose a series of five to ten posts into a short report that will serve as your new lead magnet? What about the emails you write and answer each day?
- Can you turn some of them into blog posts?
- Use them as part of your latest project?
- Share them on social media?
Speaking of which … are you mining your social media interactions for usable content? If you have a great conversation with someone from your target audience on Facebook, turn that same content into a blog post. Or use it as part of your weekly emails. You get the idea.
There's a lot you can do with . If you've been in business for a while, you will have plenty of content to work with. Often all it takes is an idea and some slight tweaking and updating to turn an old piece of content into something new and exciting that your readers will love. And it will alleviate the need of writing constant content.
3.
Use Pre-Written Content
This last one is my personal favorite. Of course, my opinion these days isn't impartial since I co-own Piggy Make Bank with Tracy and we sell plenty of pre-written content. But it was my favorite long before I considered writing and selling PLR. It was my favorite back when I made my living exclusively from blogging at www.HillbillyHousewife.com and I used it on various other niche sites over the years.
PLR or pre-written content is the perfect compromise between writing everything yourself (costing you a lot of extra time) and ghost written content (costing you a lot of extra cash). You get the best of both worlds. High quality, well-researched content at an affordable price. All you have to do is put it to good use throughout your content marketing.
- Use PLR articles to quickly create new blog posts for your fans.
- Use snippets of those same articles to start conversations on social media.
- Compile a few articles into a short report and you can have a fresh lead magnet up in half a day.
- Or grab a bunch of content and use it as a shortcut when creating your latest info product.
The possibilities are endless once you start to play with pre-written content.
